From 26.12.2019 we have rented a four-wheel jeep at Ast Oman and have been 12 days with the roof tent on the road. We drove along the coast to Masirah Island and visited Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi. Very nice hikes to the end of the valley with swimming in the pools were impressive.Continue to Sur and Ras al Jinz in the turtle resort. Then crossing to Masirah Island, staying overnight once, circumnavigating the island. Then we drove 2 days through the Wahiba Desert.
The overnight stay on a dune was a special highlight of our trip. The visit to Wadi Bani Khalid, again with a hike to the end of the valley was combined with refreshing swimming in the pools and a mountain tour, well marked, to a peak with Oman flag. Further it went on the Jabal Shams and the “airy” hike at the balcony way. Fantastic deep views in the “grand Canyon”. The night on the plateau was cold, but we enjoyed the special sunset. Finally we made a more than adventurous drive from Nizwa via Hoota further through the Wadi Sathan to Rustaq.
Looking back, what made these 15 days truly unforgettable was the incredible variety Oman offers within such short driving distances. Every day felt like a new chapter. One morning we were waking up to the sound of waves crashing along the endless beaches of Masirah Island, and the next we were navigating steep mountain roads toward dramatic viewpoints high above the clouds. The sense of freedom that comes with rooftop camping added a special charm to the journey. Being able to stop wherever we felt inspired—whether beside a lonely beach, in the vast desert, or on a mountain ridge—allowed us to fully experience the country’s natural beauty.
We were also struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Omani people. At fuel stations, small cafés, and village shops, we always felt welcomed with genuine kindness. Even when we needed help finding a route or asking for local recommendations, everyone was eager to assist. It made traveling off the beaten path feel comfortable and safe.
On this route there are fantastic places to stay overnight and hiking possibilities (e.g. the snake valley). Unfortunately we ran out of time and had to bring the car back. The 2 final days with you in the cozy Lana Villa with a visit to the great mosque were to relax the crowning conclusion of our Oman trip.
