Roof top Camping in Oman
We are an Italian family and last December, we had the amazing opportunity to explore Oman in a way we had never done before — 10 days of rooftop camping under the stars. We decided to travel completely independently, without the help of a tour operator or a guide. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
We started planning our trip a little late — in October or November, which, we admit, isn’t ideal for organizing such an adventurous journey. We’re not exactly the most organized people, and planning a self-guided road trip with camping and kids felt a little overwhelming at first. There was a lot to figure out, especially because Oman is not your typical tourist destination with everything ready-made. But we were determined to make it happen.
The first thing on my list was to find a roof tent. This was non-negotiable — we wanted the freedom to camp wherever we liked, and a roof tent seemed like the perfect way to enjoy Oman’s landscapes comfortably and safely. However, it wasn’t as easy as I thought. Searching online, I found either very expensive options, or cars that didn’t seem reliable, or setups that just didn’t feel right for a family. The selection wasn’t wide, and I started to worry we’d have to change our plans.
Then I came across Oliver, and everything changed.
I contacted him and explained our situation. He was immediately helpful and reassuring. Not only did he offer a well-maintained roof tent that could easily be mounted on our rented 4×4, but he also provided a complete camping set — chairs, table, kitchen tools, gas stove, cool box, lights… everything we could possibly need to be comfortable and self-sufficient on the road.
When we finally met him in Oman, we were even more impressed. Oliver was friendly, professional, and incredibly helpful. He didn’t just rent us equipment — he supported us like a local friend would. Without charging anything extra, he added a second ground tent, sleeping bags, and other small but essential items. He really went beyond what we expected and stayed true to the price we had originally agreed upon.
But Oliver’s help didn’t end there. He gave us valuable travel advice, suggesting the best routes, must-see destinations, and insider tips on where to camp for free. His knowledge of Oman made a big difference in how smoothly our trip went. We discovered beautiful wadis, peaceful desert spots, and scenic mountain roads thanks to his guidance.
For ten days, we traveled across Oman with full freedom — waking up to sunrises over canyons, eating dinner under the stars, and sleeping in total silence surrounded by nature. It felt like a dream, and it was all possible thanks to the comfort and confidence we had in our gear and planning.
One of the best parts of rooftop camping in Oman is the sense of freedom. You’re not tied to hotels or fixed itineraries. If you like a spot, you stay. If not, you move on. And Oman is incredibly welcoming to campers — wild camping is legal and safe, and the people are kind and respectful.
I sincerely recommend this kind of trip to anyone who loves nature, adventure, and the feeling of truly exploring a country. And if you’re thinking about it, don’t hesitate to contact Oliver. His service, support, and generosity made all the difference for us.
10 days of rooftop camping in Oman gave us memories that will last a lifetime — and we didn’t need a tour guide to find them.
