2 Weeks in Oman: A Rooftop Tent Camping Adventure (Guest Story)
This guest post comes from Michael Samer, founder of “Fahrrad Gegenwind” in Munich, Germany. He spent two weeks on an unforgettable Oman camping trip with one of our rooftop tent 4×4 setups. His story captures the raw beauty, freedom, and magic of discovering Oman off the beaten path.
We recently went on a two-week Oman camping trip, and it exceeded all expectations! We were a group of friends, eager for adventure, and Active Oman helped us create a journey we’ll never forget. Their rooftop tent setup made us feel like modern nomads — free, wild, and well-prepared.
We experienced everything from desert sunsets to lush wadis and coastal cliffs. It was not just a trip — it was a feeling of complete freedom, of reconnecting with nature, of discovering a country that still feels untouched.
Wadis and Coastlines
We started our Oman camping trip toward Sur, visiting Wadi Shab—a green oasis with turquoise pools and dramatic cliffs. We camped on the beach, then explored three more wadis en route to Ras Al Jinz. Oman’s coastline amazed us with endless beaches and wild cliffs.
Desert Crossing and Bar Al Hikman

We crossed the desert using Maps.me for navigation and stayed overnight under a blanket of stars. Bar Al Hikman was a highlight—white sand, shallow lagoons, and peaceful isolation.
Sugardunes to Salalah

After Al Khaluf’s giant dunes, we drove 5 hours south to Salalah. The stretch from Shuwamiyah to Salalah offers some of Oman’s most breathtaking views.
Salalah to Yemen Border
The southern coastal road is safe and scenic—high cliffs and pristine beaches. We camped by the sea and felt totally at peace.
Mountain Magic in the North

On the return, we explored Al Hamra, Wadi Damm, Jebel Shams, and did the famous Snake Gorge road. The scenery was jaw-dropping—deep canyons, historic forts, and mountain silence.
